NDIKUMANA: WE ARE NOT THERE YET

Sofapaka goalkeeper Justin Ndikumana says the team cannot celebrate now on the short term gains of picking three wins in four matches and has urged his teammates to keep working with an aim of being in the top two by the time the first leg ends.

The Burundian keeper who joined Batoto ba Mungu from Congolese side St. Elloi Lupopo has played in the last five games, the one against Tusker FC being as a second half sub. He has played four full games, keeping clean sheets in three of them.

“I am happy with how I have performed and how as a team we have turned the tide, but we can’t over-celebrate. That is past and we need to keep working hard because the road is still long and there is so much work to do,” the shot stopper said.

“My desire would be to see the team post in the first two positions by the time we change over to the second leg so that we can be in a good position to push for the title in the second leg. It is possible, looking at how we are playing now,” he further stated.

Ndikumana had a delay in his life at Sofapaka with his paperwork taking longer than expected to be processed, but he is pleased to be finally donning a Sofapaka jersey.

“I was patient all that time and I kept working hard and I was really pleased to finally get that chance to play. My target is always to help the team whenever I go and that is exactly what I want to do here,” the lanky keeper noted.

On how he has settled into the Kenyan Premier League;

|The league here is very very tough. There is no small team or big team because everyone is capable of shocking the other. It is very competitive and for a player, this is something good. I feel very settled now and I am ready to compete with the best,” he stated.

SOFAPAKA UP TO FOURTH AFTER SHARKS WIN

Sofapaka moved to fourth on the Kenyan Premier League table after beating Kariobangi Sharks 2-0 in Machakos on Sunday. Goals in either half from Cliff Kasuti and Umaru Kasumba saw Batoto ba Mungu break Sharks’ unbeaten run and pick their third win in four games.

The victory took Sofapaka to 17 points, seven behind leaders Mathare United and one behind third placed Tusker FC.

Sofapaka started the Sunday afternoon tie positively, attacking from the first minute, but the team was forced to reshuffle the team just 12 minutes into the game after skipper Dennis Odhiambo limped off after a collision with Sharks’ midfielder James Mazembe forced him out injured.

Elli Asieche came in to replace him.

Sofapaka had three early chances with John Avire’s shot from a freekick going wide while Kasuti saw his shot from inside the box saved by Sharks keeper John Oyemba. In the 22nd minute, Titus Achesa forced the Sharks keeper to a great save with a well curled freekick from the edge of the area.

The team finally found the lead in the 27th minute when Kasuti tapped the ball home from close range after Oyemba spilled a corner taken by Asieche.

Batoto ba Mungu continued their dominance and two minutes to the break, there was another chance when Mohammed Kilume’s dipped ball from range found Kasumba, but the Ugandan could not have the ball on target despite volleying it over the keeper.

In added time, Sharks almost drew level, but Faina Jacobs raced back to make a decisive tackle to pick the ball off Sydney Lokale as he prepared to have a go at goal from a counter attack.

In the second half, Sharks were stronger and they almost drew level three minutes in when Justin Ndikumana spilled a cross from the right but Lokale failed to hit the target under pressure from Moussa Omar.

Quarter of an hour before full time, Sharks came close but defender Omar made a brilliant block, throwing himself on the way as Eric Kapaito pulled the trigger at the backpost.

With the clock ticking, coach John Baraza threw in defender Soter Kayumba for Brian Magonya in a bid to tighten up the defense. However, Kasumba ensured the nerves were settled when he scored in added time off an Ibrahim Kajjuba cross in a move initiated by Kayumba.

PLAYERS PLAYING WITH MORE FREEDOM, SAYS BARAZA

Sofapaka FC coach John Baraza says players are now playing more freely and expressing themselves without fear, something he says has been the biggest difference over the last three games. Sofapaka has won twice and drawn one in those three games and Baraza says this came as a result of giving the players more freedom.

“I have not changed much since I came in but what we have done is to give the players more freedom to express themselves and now we see the results on the pitch. I think that is working for us because the players are not limited in their style of play,” the tactician stated.

The results have seen Sofapaka rise to seventh on the table with 14 points, 10 behind leaders Mathare United and coach Baraza believes this is a gap that can be closed in due time.

“When you look at the table, you see that teams are not that far from each other and it is still early in the season. We have a very good chance of closing on the gap and ours is to take game by game and post good results,”: he said.

The team now switches attention to Sunday’s home tie against Kariobangi Sharks at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos and Baraza has admitted it will be a toigh tie against the unbeaten side who denied him the FKF Shield title in the final last year.

“Sharks is a very tough team but we are also a tough outfit. We have our strategies worked out in training and we are ready for them. We will give them a good game and we are hopeful we can vie for the three points,” Baraza further stated.

DENNIS: WE HAVE WORKED HARD TO TIGHTEN DEFENSE

Tightening the defense has been one way of ensuring the team rises back to the top, midfielder Dennis Odhiambo has stated. The Kenyan international says sewing a leaking defense has given the team more confidence and notes this will be the plan moving forward.

“Strikers win you games but defense wins you titles. We realized that we were conceding so much and we worked hard to try and reduce that which worked over the last three games. We have only conceded twice through set pieces but improved a lot overall,” Odhiambo noted.

He adds; “Also, we have started scoring more and our strikers have picked that finishing touch which was missing and the confidence has improved. We have worked so hard and the fruits are now visible.”

Commenting on the game against Sharks on Sunday, Odhiambo has called on the team to keep working hard and is wary of a motivated side that is keen to guard its unbeaten run.

“They are a tough side having played well in Tanzania and tactically they are good as well. The are good on the ball but we have a strategy to face them and ensure we win,” the midfielder added.

WARURU FIRED UP FOR SHARKS DUEL IN MACHAKOS

Striker Stephen Waruru believes that the team can bag maximum points when they face the unbeaten Kariobangi Sharks in Machakos on Sunday in Match Day 11 of the 2018/2019 Kenyan Premier League campaign.

The pint-sized assassin has been in good form over the last three games scoring one and assisting the other and he hopes the team can take this form across to the Sharks game.

“They are a good side with a lot of motivation after winning a Cup in Dar es Salaam, but we are also a good side. We have confidence as well from our run over the past three games and we hope this can push us into that tough game,” Waruru said.

Speaking on the team’s form at the moment, Waruru is more than excited that the team has finally turned the bend after a tough start to the campaign.

“At this moment the team cohesion has improved and the team spirit on and off the pitch is brilliant. We sat down as a team and looked at the position we were in and everyone realized that we needed to work hard,”

“Where we were is not Sofapaka’s position and I am glad we have risen and we now know what we need to do to fight off with the big boys for the title,” Waruru stated.

COACH BARAZA HOPES TO BUILD ON SONY DRAW

Sofapaka interim coach John Baraza says he hopes the team can build on from last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Sony Sugar as they prepare to take on Posta Rangers in the ninth match of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

The team kept their first clean sheet of the season in a 0-0 draw with the Sugar Millers in Machakos on Saturday and it is from this point that Baraza wants to build on and get the second win of the season.

“We tried to fix the defense (against Sony) because we have been conceding a lot and from that point of view, I was satisfied with the result and we can build on that,” the coach said.

He added; “We have also worked on the finishing because we always create chances, but don’t put them in the net. We need to improve on that.”

Baraza insists that the team will still retain its project of trying to win a second Kenyan Premier League title despite a slow start to the season and he believes the earlier results start clicking in, the better it is for the team.

“I am happy to have been given this responsibility and I just want to help the team do well. Sofapaka is not supposed to be down there. We have targets to win the title at the end of the season and that target remains and we have to keep working hard,” the coach noted.
