SOFAPAKA HELD BY KARIOBANGI SHARKS IN MACHAKOS

Sofapaka dropped more points in their quest to wrestle the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title after they were held to a barren draw by Kariobangi Sharks at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos yesterday.
During the match played under an overcast sky, Batoto Ba Mungu had a huge chunk of action only to be wasteful in front of goal.
Umaru Kasumba was the first to miss a guilt-edged scoring chance inside 12th minute from the onset when he dummied round the Sharks defence only to shoot agonizingly wide.
Ezekiel Okare was the next to misfire from 16 yards out after leaving his markers for dead but still could not convert the chance, Sharks made swift counter-attacks which almost yielded a goal.

On the half hour mark, Sofapaka were again denied by the stubborn Sharks defence when Meshack Karani miscued his kick during which time Sharks defence had gone to slumber.

From the team that lost 1 – 2 to Ulinzi Stars last Wednesday, Sofapaka coach Sam Ssimbwa made only one change by introducing Karani to take the place of Kennedy Oduor who was consigned to the bench.
Goalkeeper George Opiyo got a third straight start in the absence of first keeper, Ugandan Mathias Kigonya who suffered a dislocated shoulder in the game against Posta Rangers three weeks ago.
Opiyo gave a good account of himself and was shielded by a compact defence line composed of Jonathan Mugabi and Rodgers Aloro.
For the second straight game, Ezekiel Okare, who has eight goals so far, started on the bench with Kasumba being deployed as the lone striker.
And for Sofapaka , they will strongly feel they were victims of rough justice after failure to avenge the 3-1 defeat suffered at the hands of Sharks in the first leg match.
However, speaking after the match, Sofapaka deputy coach John Baraza was unfazed by the result, saying they still harbour hopes of clinching the title.
“We may have dropped points but this is football. Its not over until its over. We will devise a strategy of getting a winning formula in our next match against Kakamega Homeboyz,” said Baraza.

Echesa: Dont Rule Sofapaka Out Of SPL Title Race!

NAIROBI, Kenya-Despite trailing leaders Gor Mahia FC by nine points, Sofapaka FC skipper, Hillary Echesa, believes they are firmly in contention for the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) title.

Batoto Ba Mungu, who last won the league in 2009, suffered a setback in the title race when they lost 1-2 to Ulinzi Stars on Wednesday in Kericho with record SPL winners Gor’s 3-0 win over Chemelil Sugar FC establishing daylight between them and the chasers in their bid to extend their tally to 16.

Echesa is confident that they can bring their pursuit back on track in the remaining 10 matches starting this Saturday where they come up against high flying Kariobangi Sharks FC at the Narok Stadium.

“The league is a marathon and it is still early to decide anything. We are focused on reducing the gap because this is football and anything can happen. Nine points is not a very big gap. I’m sure if they falter, we will catch up with them,” Echesa told SportPesa News.

Masoud suspended

With the first leg match having ended in a barren draw, Echesa is wary of the threat posed by William Muluya’s charges who are unbeaten in the last four without conceding a goal.

“We have had short time to prepare but the mood in camp is great. We want to get the maximum points. Sharks is in form and their confidence is also high. If we get a goal in the first 20 minutes it will be good for us. Hopefully we will emerge the winners,” he added.

A reprieve for Sofapaka is the absence of Kenyan international Masoud Juma who is suspended for this match after accumulating five yellow cards.

Sofapaka will be banking on star striker Umaru Kasumba to provide goals upfront alongside Rodgers Aloro and Michael Oduor.

SOFAPAKA VS KARIOBANGI SHARKS PREVIEW

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title contenders Sofapaka will be hoping to make a recovery after their inexplicable 2-1 loss at the hands of Ulinzi Stars three days ago when they face Kariobangi Sharks at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday.
During the match against Ulinzi Stars, Sofapaka created a litany of chances which went to waste and one hopes that Head Coach Sam Ssimbwa and his deputy John Baraza have rectified the frailties for their charges to sink Sharks in the “Eastlands Derby”.
Baraza noted that while the team gave a good account of themselves, there were glaring frailties in the attacking line which needed to be addressed.
“Ulinzi were worthy opponents but I think it would have been a different story altogether had we taken all our scoring chances. Hopefully, the players have learned and will get it absolutely right during the match against Kariobangi Sharks,”
Both Sharks and Sofapaka appear of the same context of strength although it would be safe to say that  Batoto Ba Mungu will be the ones under pressure to conjure up a descent result after falling 3-1 to their opponents the last time the teams met, in the GOtv Shield Cup.
Yesterday, Sofapaka Technical Director Martin Ndagano declared that it is pay-back time, adding that another loss to Sharks would be too bitter a pill to swallow for Batoto Ba Mungu.
“Although it will be a match like any other, losing to Sharks for the second time in the season will be unacceptable. I’m glad that we are meeting Kariobangi Sharks at a time when we are in an alluring form and God-willing, we will dispatch them (Sharks) and increase our chances of lifting the title,” said Ndagano who previously served as Sofapaka’s Head Coach.
For Sofapaka, they will only be too eager to take full advantage of Kariobangi Sharks’ set-back after four of the latter’s key players including Bolton Omwenga, Mike Misigo, Eric Juma and John Oyemba were ruled out of the match due to nagging injuries.
But Sofapaka defence will have to be on full alert to avert forays by Sharks lethal trio of Masoud Juma, Ovellah Ochieng’ and Patillah Omotto.
However, suffice to say, if these three players are Kariobangi Shark’s mainstay, then the William Muluya-coached team can only fail to mark Sofapaka Ugandan strikers Umaru Kasumba and Ali Feni at their own peril.
Kasumba, who has been ‘bullying’ opponents defenders almost to submission, will be among players who will be key to success for Sofapaka who are battling Gor Mahia for the KPL title.

SOFAPAKA SUFFERS SETBACK IN TITLE RACE

Ulinzi shot down Sofapaka 2-1 in a thrilling encounter staged at the Kericho green Stadium yesterday. Ulinzi’s Kasuti Cliff opened the score sheet in the 53rd minute when he headed home a thundering header. His team mate Samwel Onyango added the second goal in the 60th minute when he converted a fine cross from Kasuti.

Ulinzi ended Sofapaka’s unbeaten run of seven games. Batoto Ba Mungu prolific striker Umaru Kasumba scored the consolation goal for his side when headed home a cross from Michael Oduor in the 70th minute. Kasumba’s goal brings to nine the goals he has scored in the league so far and narrows the gap between him and Ulinzi’s Stephen Waruru who is the leading goals’ poacher so far in the top-flight league. Waruru has netted eleven goals. He played well yesterday but luck was not on his side. Ulinzi who displayed classic soccer squandered several scoring chances but all the same they collected maximum points.

Ulinzi coach Benjamin Nyangweso said it was a tough game but he lauded his lads for using all the tricks in the book to net the two goals and subsequent victory. He said despite many games to play, he is focused on competing and collecting points. His side has a date with Posta Rangers in the next game. “We are focus in competing and collect maximum points in the fixtures on card. We are in good form and therefore we’re optimistic of doing well in the next games,” he added.
