COACH BARAZA PREVIEWS CHEMELIL GAME, GIVES TEAM NEWS

Head coach John Baraza expects the team to finish the second leg on a high but warns it will not be an easy tie away to Chemelil Sugar on Saturday. Sofapaka has beaten Chemelil eight times over 20 meetings and lost four, but Baraza says it has always been tight.

“Chemelil is not an easy team especially at their home ground. It is always tough when we face them and scores are always close. But we have prepared well and everyone is looking fit and sharp. We want to go there and fight for maximum points,” the tactician said.

On how important last week’s victory over KCB was;

“We had come off two games where we had not won and getting those three points was massive to our confidence. I think the boys are now stronger mentally and it gives us courage to face such a tough away game,”

On the team news:

“Mousa Omar is out on suspension after accumulating five yellow cards. Dennis (Odhiambo) has returned to training but we don’t want to risk him for this game especially on a tough field like Chemelil. Kilume (Mohammed) is continuing well with his recovery and we should see him back in training maybe in the next three weeks,”

“Achesa (Titus) is back after serving his one match suspension. We also have Maelo back who was out last week. I am happy that almost 90pc of the team is available,”

On the draw with Bungoma Super Stars in the FKF Shield:

“Last year we lost in the final through our own mistakes but this time we are determined to make things right. This is a chance for us to fight for a place to play continental football and everyone in the team wants to have this chance,”

“Cup tournaments are always tricky especially when you are playing against teams from the lower divisions. It might look easy on paper but football will always be football. We will tackle it with seriousness and also give the other players who haven’t played much in the league an opportunity in this Cup tournament.”

WILLIS EXCITED AHEAD OF CHEMELIL RETURN

Sofapaka defender Willis Ouma has warned his teammates it will not be an easy afternoon when the team drops down to Awasi to take on his former side Chemelil Sugar on Saturday afternoon. Ouma who left Chemelil to join Sofapaka two seasons ago will be travelling back to his former employers for the second time.

“If we can manage to play the ball in their own half, that will be an advantage to us. Chemelil are a hard nut to crack in their own turf partly because they have a very expansive pitch and they are used to it. They will play the balls behind us and if we can deal with that it will be good for us,” the defender noted.

He added; “We are on a mission to finish the first leg up there and we can’t afford to lose points now. It will be a tough match but we are prepared to give our best.”

Ouma has been a started in the last two games after a slow start to the season and he hopes he can build on that over the next two games to fight for a regular starting place.

“It wasn’t easy being out for 14, 15 matches and to finally get that chance especially with how hard my year started, I can say I am more than proud. I want to build on this, build my confidence and play better to get a more regular place,” stated the defender.

BARAZA EXPECTS TOUGH OUTING AGAINST KCB

Head coach John Baraza expects a tough game against KCB in Sunday but insists the team is ready to bounce back after dropping points in the last two matches.

Baraza believes KCB is a hard nut to crack especially having grown into the league after their promotion.

“KCB is a good team and they are not new in this league. They have good young players and looking at how they have been playing of late, I know it will be a tough game,”

“The last two games haven’t affected us because as much as we dropped points we played good football. The players have been very confident and motivated in training and I am convinced we are in very good shape for the match on Sunday,” the tactician offered.

He added; “Our target us to be in the too three by the end if the first leg and if we can get six points in the next two games, we would be very happy.”

Coach Baraza has also given an update on the team news.

“Titus Achesa is suspended for the game because of give yellow cards and will be out of the game,”

“Dennis (Odhiambo) has trained well this week but he is yet to hit the fitness levels we want. He might be in the team but just for the last 10 or five minutes,”

“Kilume (Mohammed) is recuperating well. We had scans on the hamstring and it’s not as bad as we thought before. Probably in the next three weeks he will be back in light training,” the coach offered.

KASUMBA THIRSTING FOR KPL GOLDEN BOOT

Sofapaka striker Umaru Kasumba says he years to fight for the Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot and hopes his goals can spur the team to the title.

Kasumba has so far scored six goals for the team despite missing almost one month of action at the beginning of the season due to injury.

“I am happy with how the season has progressed for me. Of course it was tough at the beginning because of injury but I have managed to work hard to get back in good form,” the Ugandan striker said.

Though he does not have a definite target of the number of goals he wants to score at the end of the season, his eyes are fixed on getting something at the tail end of action.

“Of course every player wants to win things and for me being a striker, I want to get that Golden Boot. I hope to keep scoring and working hard each game to help them team,”

“The most important thing for me though is what the team achieves. If I score the goals and help the team win the title, that would be perfect for me,”

“So far things have been okay for us but we have to continue working hard to achieve our targets. The league is tough and we need to be at our best always,” adds the forward

COACH BARAZA EXPECTS A TOUGH MATCH WITH HOMEBOYZ

Sofapaka FC boss John Baraza is relishing a challenge against his friend and former teammate Nicholas Muyoti, recently appointed as Kakamega Homeboyz head coach. Baraza has already beaten Muyoti this season while he was with nzoia and he says he expects a tough outing when they clash again in Kakamega.

“I know Muyoti because he has been my close friend for a long time and we have played together. I know his tactics and I know how he plays so we should expect a very tough game in Kakamega,” Baraza said.

“It will be a close game but whoever commits the least mistakes tactically and technically will carry the day. We have prepared well and ready for the assignment,” Baraza further stated.

The coach says the boys’ morale is not reduced despite last weekend’s loss against Gor Mahia, saying he was proud of how his charges played and would like them to keep the same momentum.

“Our target is to remain within the top three this first leg and ensure that we don’t have a big gap with the leaders. Every point is important for us because this league is very tough,” the tactician offered.

TEAM NEWS AHEAD OF KAKAMEGA HOMEBOYZ TRIP

The boys had the final training session on Thursday ahead of the trip to Kakamega where the team takes on Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium on Saturday.

Head coach John Baraza has delivered an update on who is in and who is out of that trip, with the boys set to travel early Friday morning.

On Brian Magonya and Umaru Kasumba who both limped out of last weekend’s game against Gor Mahia;

“Magonya and Kasumba were able to shake off the knocks they picked up and have trained well this week. They are ready for action and I am happy that the injuries they picked were not serious.”

On midfielder Mohammed Kilume;

“Moha tore his hamstring muscles but the preliminary report we have received is that it might not be as serious as it looked. We had initially feared he might be out for up to three months, but the first tests conducted showed he might be back to action in the next 4-5 weeks. We are waiting for a second scan which will give us the final picture but probably in five weeks he should be back training.”

On Dennis Odhiambo;

“Dennis has integrated with the rest of the group but slowly. We don’t want to rush him because we also know he is an important player not only for Sofapaka but the national team as well so we want him fully recovered. He trained well on Wednesday and he has gone for a final scan on his knee. He will not be ready for this weekend but I am confident he will be available in the next game.”

COACH BARAZA LAUDS FIGHTING SPIRIT AFTER GOR LOSS

Sofapaka fc head coach John Baraza says he is pleased with the fighting spirit the boys showed despite going down by a solitary goal to reigning champions Gor Mahia in Nakuru on Sunday. Samuel Onyango’s 24th minute strike proved the difference as Sofapaka’s five match unbeaten streak was put to a halt.

“I think I am happy with the boys and a little disappointed with the result because at some point I think we deserved at least a point. We had the chances and we played really well,” the coach said.

He added; “I think I am more pleased by their fighting spirit because we never gave up fighting even when we were a goal down. We had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after Kilume (Mohammed) was injured and we still gave it a fight,” further stated the tactician.

The team now shifts focus to next Saturday’s assignment away to Kakamega Homeboyz and coach Baraza is confident the team will bounce back.

“We cannot put our heads down after this result. We move on with confidence and plan to do better in the next match,” stated the tactician.
